Notebook or app? How to move your farm onto your phone in one evening

A practical plan for moving from notebooks and spreadsheets to a farm management app: where to start, what to move first, and how to get the whole family on board.
On many farms the information is scattered: the herd in one notebook, treatments in another, invoices in a binder and inspection dates in someone's head. Each of these works as long as one person remembers it. Moving to an app doesn't have to be a revolution. A good plan and one evening to start are enough.
Start with what hurts most
Don't move everything at once. Pick the one thing that gets lost most often or eats the most time today. On dairy farms that's usually the herd and withdrawal periods, on arable farms the spray records, and on every farm the machine inspections and insurance.
Don't retype what's already on record
- Herd: in Poland you can pull the whole herd from the IRZplus registry instead of entering every animal. The Polish version of FarmOps does it with one button.
- Fields: import your plots from the eWniosekPlus subsidy application, with the names and areas you already filed.
- Machines: make, model and insurance end date are enough to start. Add the service history over time.
Log it where it happens
The biggest advantage of an app over a notebook is that it's always with you. Log the treatment by the cow, the spraying in the field, the refuelling by the tractor. FarmOps works with no signal and syncs itself once you're back online, and you can scan the ear tag with the camera instead of typing fourteen characters in your gloves.
Bring the family and the team in
A farm is teamwork. In FarmOps you invite family, workers, your vet or the AI technician, and each of them sees only what you give them access to. That way news of a treated cow or an oil change doesn't stay in one person's head.
After a month you'll see the numbers
When costs and income go into the app as they happen, after the first month you see your farm's balance and costs split by field and season. That's when the notebook stops being needed, because the app answers questions that would take a whole evening of adding up on paper.
